The Painterly Landscapes of Hokkaido

Updated: 6 days ago

When one views photographs from Hokkaido prior to actually visiting, it seems quite wondrous to think that a landscape could look so painterly. And when we arrive in this land, it is astounding to realise that even in the flesh, it does indeed seem as if someone has painted the scenes before us. I think Hokkaido and many other wild parts of Japan are quite unique in this respect.

As I discussed in my first RPS talk recently, it can often take months or, as in this case, years to find the right aesthetic. To be fair I had been pre-occupied with the black+white scenes primarily. I knew however that there was potential for a set of colour landscapes. I was in Hokkaido between autumn and winter, which obvioulsy meant missing the peak of either of those seasons. As you can see, there was still plenty of colour to play with. Great care is needed to represent this landscape subtly, whilst always striving for something unique and personal to our own vision.

These photographs form part of a new collection of colour scenes from Japan. I'll be adding more to the website over the coming months. I hope you enjoy them.

This is a short blog post this time simply to share these scenes with you.

Just a reminder that you can catch my next RPS talk here: The Art of Composition.

New workshop dates here, and lastly my currently available eBooks.

Thanks for looking and feel free to contact me with any queries via the contact page here.
