B+W Photography Magazine: Creating a Sense of Place + The Narrative Lens continued

There is a profound difference between visiting a location and inhabiting it. This month, I am incredibly proud to see my latest body of work - focused on the remote, windswept beauty of Unst in the Shetland Isles - featured in Black + White Photography issue 311. I hope you enjoy the feature. I relish the challenge of attempting to evoke my feelings about a location through the written word. However, photography is obviously my medium. Through these images, I hope the viewer can experience some of the atmosphere, as I experienced it, of this wild and magical island.

The Narrative of Unst

Unst is a place of extremes; it is the UK's most northerly inhabited island, a landscape defined by its edges and its isolation. But for me, the project wasn't about documenting the geography. It was about finding a 'sense of place' - tuning into the rhythmic pulse of the Atlantic and the quiet resilience of the land. Like my previous projects, Where Ravens Soar, Beyond the Cairn, and Chi-suji, this series was born from long weeks of exploration and a deep, internal 'tuning in' to the energy of this landscape.

The Power of the Written Word

As those who follow my work know, the writing is as vital to me as the image. Writing the feature for this issue allowed me to articulate the 'why' behind the lens. A project is only complete when the visual and the narrative fully express the intention.

People often ask: 'How do you move from a collection of images to a published, 10-page feature in the UK’s most prestigious photography magazine?'

The answer lies in the 'Narrative Lens'. It is a process of curation, patience, and belief - the very same framework I taught during my three years at Musashino Art University and the foundation of my private mentorship program. Every one of my major projects has been featured in Black + White Photography. This isn't a coincidence; it is the result of a repeatable, project-based methodology.

Sequencing images with one of the groups at Musashino Art University. There were actually 100 students in the class. Mentoring 1 to 1 is much less stressful!

I have developed a curriculum specifically designed to help photographers find their 'inner voice.' I now offer this as a Private Project Mentorship - Are you ready to stop wondering and start building?

We will strip back the technical noise and focus entirely on your 'Narrative Lens' - turning your recurring motifs into a gallery-ready series.

Warmest regards

Karl.
