It's probably safe to say that the vast majority of photographers become particularly excited when we receive the annual, and these days, short-lived covering of snow. I am no exception. Snow has the obvious ability to create a wonderful veil of negative space across the land, allowing us to compose photographs which simply wouldn't work, or would lack impact, under normal circumstances.

I feel very fortunate to live on the Yorkshire Wolds. What it may lack in drama compared to more ruggedly wild landscapes, it makes up for in peace and tranquility. And as a keen cyclist, the relatively empty roads are blissful.

I've passed this tree many times over the past four years, usually on my bike, and I've always thought that it would make a nice image in winter, with a dusting of snow. Winter certainly arrived in full force yesterday. I don't need much of an excuse to dig out my little-used mountain clothing. I grabbed a camera and headed out into a world of white. The camera of choice was my trusty old Bronica RF645, a wondefully compact, medium format rangefinder. I think I got the shot; unfortunately it was so cold with the extra wind chill that the electronics eventually froze! So, the image above was actually captured on my iPhone. For this I used the Pro Camera app which allows us to shoot RAW files. I then processed as I normally would with digital files from my 'big camera' - using SilverEfex Pro. For a phone pic, it's not bad is it? It will certainly be fun to compare the analogue photograph once I get it developed.

In other news, I'd like to thank the Royal Photographic Society and everyone who took the time to attend my three talks over the past couple of months. I've really enjoyed sharing my passion for creativity and the natural world and I hope to present further talks in the not too distant future.

I had to pop out into the wide world earlier today and to my horror the shops were playing Christmas tunes already! I really don't like to think about it all until Christmas eve to be truthful. However, I have to say that now could be a good time to perhaps consider a unique gift for a loved one, or a treat to oneself, by checking out the following options listed below!

I am of course available for 1-2-1 in person workshops too. Additionally, we can make online sessions tailored to your individual requirements. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for further info.
