'Nature creates such sublime sculptural details in this landscape... our appreciation of the visual feast before us becomes an act of respect.'
For years, I chased the 'killer shot' - the perfect, pristine landscape that fits neatly into a portfolio. But as I struggled with the weight of chronic illness, including tinnitus and Hashimoto’s disease, those 'pretty' images began to feel like a lie. I was seeking a new direction. Where Ravens Soar is the result of that search.
From the misty spires of the Quiraing to the most northerly edges of the UK, this series is more than a collection of photographs. It is a multi-faceted meditation on a journey that has been aesthetic, physical, emotional, and spiritual.
In these pages, you will find:
50+ High-resolution black and white Images, capturing the 'undulating energy' of the Scottish Highlands and beyond.
Personal reflections: honest dialogues on navigating the landscape and creativity while struggling with debilitating illness.
The symbolism of the Raven as a guide through the subtle tones of this project, a symbol of wildness and resistance.
It’s about learning to be alone, without being lonely, and finding a home within the darker world of chronic illness through the lens of a camera. Whether it was taking 'baby steps' on the slopes of Cùl Mòr or standing in a Highland gale to silence the internal noise of tinnitus, these experiences shaped the work you see here.
I invite you to experience this journey, to connect with the landscape and perhaps find your own rhythm within these layered contours.
