With no real plan I walked out along the path heading south from the roadside at Loch Morlich. This ancient forest breathes new life into the weary. If you are attentive enough it will speak to you. Guided only by instinct I walked, slowly. A less trodden trail caught my eye, illuminated by the low sun, the brightness of which could be blinding at times. An uplifting breeze, full of the scent of pine forest, occasionally stopped me in my tracks to inhale deeply. A bellowing of bullfinches were chirping and flitting their way over golden grasses. Deeper into the forest, the trail meandering, it didn't matter where. I knew this was the right way, because there is no wrong way here. Then I saw you, leaning gracefully. The light pierced through the surrounding forest to capture your beauty. I didn't need to come closer, you were framed so elegantly by the darkness around you.
I feel deep gratitude for these moments. Often having no real plan can be a rewarding and exhilarating way to explore. To trust our inner compass, to let go of thought, to breathe, smell, hear and touch the landscape can be the best way of giving ourselves a reset. This is slow work, requiring a patience we seem to have lost. And this is something I am working on whilst here.
